The theme of the digital age is the violence born of disembodiment and self-ignorance. It is parched thirst without the concept of water. Funny how A.I. data centers consume reservoirs of the stuff.
"We live within something; in a place and inside a space different than any we have lived before. It’s as if we’re all now living through a collective dream — some would say nightmare — from which we cannot awaken." Just a couple of days ago, I was telling a friend I felt really weird. As though the collective unconscious had been disabled, and there's a vacuum in its place (with Neptune on my mid-heaven, I'm sensitive to dreams and the unconscious). Your article gives meaning and context to the weirdness. Maybe the collective unconscious has not so much been disabled, as it's gone online. A fake, virtual unconscious, and we're all swimming in it.
Great article. I will see where I can watch Waking Life on line. “flat earth” phenomenon is a digital effect with many equivalents (such as “being born into the wrong body”). Once converted to data and uploaded, the world lacks all dimension and depth, and people’s minds are equally distorted. " Never heard it put that way. I used to get kind of angry with flat earthers, but now mostly I let people have whatever belief. I've been an open ocean sailor so earth as a globe is my experience. There is a reason people circumnavigate the lower 40s. This has been a reminder to me how much I need to value the few deep conversations I am able to have. Thank you.
I don't mind Flat Earthers even though they are all cultists. What I object to is "men and women of science" who purport to be experts on the scientific method, contagion and viruses, who also claim the Earth is flat. And then they refuse to discuss how sunrise or an eclipse can be predicted!! One of them regularly says — when I intervene with the same kind of logical question I would have asked when I was 8 — "There he goes again!" Oh yeah you bet your flat buns...
No I have not circumnavigated and I realize my comment made it sound like I had. While I was sailing in Fijji I got to know people who were in the process of circumnavagation and had gone more than 1/2 way round. Also the World ARC came through. Of course there are many accounts of people who have circumnavigated such as Bernard Moitessias beautifully written book, The Long Way. Anyone interested could look at Liza Blair who in 2022 sailed solo around antarctica. I have tried in the past to get flat earthers to look at this. I enjoyed your spoof on how flat earth got started. I haved toyed with the idea that it was a CIA plot to discredit conspiracy theorists. Just an aside, I tried 3 times yesterday to respond and each time the comment was lost. Mercury stationing retrograde. Maybe some flat earthers would think I'm an idiot cuz I follow astrology.
and of course it's CIA and the FErs all accuse one another of being spooks and the latest burst came ahead of the 2019 Moon Landing anniversary to discredit the credible people who had debunked that complete joke with the coke bottle up on the moon and all of that.
I did not assume you had circumnavigated but I wanted to check. When I was covering FE more there was the coalition of "flat earth astrologers" who wanted me to see the obvious and draw me in. And I would say I can see the obvious — an eclipse predicted by the sphere model @93 million miles from the sun etc. The only way they can pull off this act is in video. Nobody could ever write a convincing essay that accounts for observable verifiable facts. That is why it's all YouTubes and no articles.
A truly poignant film, one of my favorites. Spoiler Alert: when he floats away at the end, totally dis attached from his flesh body, I was stunned and went through a near death experience of sorts myself.
I corresponded with Wiley Wiggins about the last scene, as I found it puzzling. He said it was the only logical way to end the film gracefully. My question was, where did you go, and he said, I don't know.

Have you circumnavigated, Alice?
